Grandma Yogini, by Raven Howell, was written for me! I say that in jest because I’m sure the author wrote this fun and engaging children’s book for many others. As a grandma with three of my own young grands, I love that this story portrays a grandmother as an active, amusing woman sharing her love of yoga with grandchildren, Henry and Meredith, and their friends. Not only does she practice yoga and tai chi, but she also rides a motorbike, plays chase, and shows them her soccer moves!
The illustrator, Alexander Santos, shows us Grandma’s whimsical sense of humor (which I can relate with) and, with the author, introduces us briefly to the talented grandmas of Juan, Anthony, and Li through colorful drawings that jump off the page.
I read Grandma Yogini to my own grandchildren during their visit, and they recalled the times we practiced yoga on my living room carpet. “What are your favorite parts of the Grandma Yogini book?” I asked. The littlest shouted, “Animals and poses!” The middle kid said, “Soccer!” The oldest thought about it and then listed them off, “Butterfly, Cat, Cobra, Eagle, and Kangaroo!”
Thank you, Raven Howell, for this delightful book and the fun I had sharing it with the precious little ones in my life.
For all the yogini’s out there, what would be your one go-to yoga pose when you don’t have time and need to unwind? Or what do you do to unwind if it’s not yoga-related?” My go-to pose throughout the day is child’s pose followed by downward dog to get myself back to standing!
